With calls increasing, an Alabama city is hiring its first full-time firefighters.
The six firefighters will work two 24-hour shifts weekly at the Clanton Fire Department.
“We've got a good crew of volunteers it's just getting to the point where they are getting more calls than they can handle," Chief David Driver told abc33.
The number of calls went from about five to six a day, to an average of 10 to 12 and sometimes, more, Driver explained.
Many of Clanton's volunteers work for nearby departments. “I think a lot of those guys will want to come here and work for their home town so we have an advantage there," he said.
He hopes to have those firefighters on rigs in late December or early next year.
